Famous Grumps, Grouches & Curmudgeons
The GrinchWe all learn about grumps and grouches, one way or another. It's part of our cultural heritage. Of all the famous curmudgeons, it's the Grinch who stole Christmas who's right up there with Ebenezer Scrooge. People say that a humbug is either a "scrooge" or a "grinch." Created by Dr. Seuss, the Grinch first appeared in 1957. Then in 1966, MGM made a television special around the character. Many people don't know that the Grinch also starred in "Halloween is Grinch Night," as well as "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat." |
Ebenezer Scrooge (George C. Scott pictured)Okay, so the Grinch is pretty well known, but Mr. Scrooge has been around longer! Like the forces of good and evil, we have Santa Clause opposed by Ebenezer Scrooge. Doing battle every year in countless knock-offs, we're continually disappointed to see Santa win the day! Even so, we'll grudgingly admit that perhaps Christmas does have something to say for itself. Maybe. |

The television show, "Beverly Hillbillies" ran from 1962-1971, and was part of the Baby Boomer's television education. The entire generation grew up with classic TV shows, and Daisy-May "Granny" Moses, played by Irene Ryan, was the curmudgeon of all curmudgeons! |
