Pets come in all flavors and sizes, but we can say that cats tend to be more like curmudgeons than most other types of animals. True, a rhinocerous is pretty grumpy, but not many people have one of those as a pet, unless they got one for Christmas. We also know that cats don't much care for water. When we saw this particular picture, we realized that there simply had to be room in our Gallery of Famous Curmudgeons for the all-time, utlimate Master Curmudgeon Cat!

When Hallmark launched Shoebox in 1986, nobody knew that the crabby character gracing the covers of a few Shoebox cards would become a celebrity. But it didn't take long to see that Maxine's irreverent quips about aging, the workplace, retirement, political correctness, and of course sex (or the lack of it) had struck a chord. John Wagner, inspired by his mother, maiden aunts and his grandmother, created Maxine for the 1986 launch of Shoebox. Since then, Maxine has become the icon and cultural hero of Master Curmudgeons everywhere.

There's nobody better at telling us how the world ought to be that Mr. Bill O'Reilly, from FOX News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor." Not only does he have a lot of things to complain about, he does it for money! This demonstrates the clear benefit to being a professional curmudgeon. After all, not just anyone can complain and make a career out of it! And it also goes to show that with enough class, the fact that curmudgeons do indeed know what's wrong with the world can benefit humanity. It's an awesome power, to be used wisely and by only the brave of heart.
